I get the impression that more often than not the top managers and directors already consider themselves excellent leaders - convincing them otherwise so that they agree to go on a leadership development course is an uphill struggle.

I worked for a while in IT testing, some of the managers were excellent, others were complete idiots who knew not how to manage staff expectations or the most basic project goals. Such is business!

I agree with your point. CIOs and all leaders need to tune into social network and develop a personal strategy as well as a corporate strategy with company leadership.

I think it starts with today's CIO. At Intel IT, we say that the CIO (and rest of IT team), must think like the CEO (business leaders) - then use IT innovation to deliver business value.

Thanks, Chris - interesting best practice advice. You're right that organisations can't afford to wait but I wonder whether most CIOs are being as direct as the approach you've taken at Intel? My belief is probably not, and that could be because some IT leaders are waiting - mistakenly - for the business to set the course to the cloud.

At Intel IT, we are not waiting and we don't think other enterprise organizations can either. We developed our cloud computing strategy back in 2009, and selected to focus first on private cloud. We began acting in earnest in 2010 and are seeing dramatic results. With nearly 60% of our office/enterprise environment virtualized we have saved millions of dollars in costs and deployed IaaS automation that has reduced our time to provision infrastructure for new business services from 3 months to under 3 hours.

In this video, Das Kamhout (Intel IT cloud engineering lead) discusses our approach.

Struggling with the title of your post.

While I truly and whole heartedly support the context and content of your message, I believe today's CIO must think and act like the CEO today and tomorrow. As you mention, CIO and IT leaders can't wait - we have to get out in front of the business with proactive innovation and business value creation.
