Like Christmas pudding and poor-quality knitwear, now is a time of the year for traditions. And when it comes to business IT, nothing gets the attention of analysts, consultants and the trade press like an opportunity to roll out a list of CIO priorities for 2011.
We thought we’d jump on the bandwaggon, too. Here, we’ve neatly summarised – in no particular order – the 12 best articles that will help executives plan, spend and implement business IT projects in 2011.
There seems broad agreement on issues such as virtualisation, cloud, mobility and social media. But as the articles below demonstrate, there’s lots of variation too:
1. Gartner Reveals Top Predictions for IT Organisations and Users for 2011 and Beyond – Gartner
“Last year’s theme of rebalancing supply, consumer demand and regulation is still present across most of the predictions, but the view has shifted further toward external effects. This year’s top predictions highlight an increasingly visible linkage between technology decisions and outcomes, both economic and societal.”
2. How to Get the Budget You Need in 2011 – CIO Update
“By developing an ROI-based IT strategy, a CIO can assure a successful outcome through the budgeting process by showing a prioritized and sequenced set of projects and justifying their value to the business. Since the project set is prioritised and sequenced, it is simpler to identify the specific projects which cannot be completed in any given year and to show the rationale for this choice to relevant stakeholders.”
3. Setting Priorities for 2011 – IT Knowledge Exchange
“The reality is that the lists created by surveys and research are self-fulfilling, based on the asked questions. If a list (of say 10 items) is presented and the respondents are asked to prioritise them, that’s what you will get. Rarely does anyone ask for respondents to fill in 10 blank rows with what their priorities may be. That would be chaotic and statistically not tenable in a report, but would make interesting reading.”
4. Ten Business Predictions for 2011 – CIO
“Michael Friedenberg, president and CEO of IDG Enterprise, offers up what he thinks will be the top ten trends in the IT community in 2011. Number one being that CIO turnover will increase if businesses can’t scale. More of CIO energies will be spent reducing cycle times and helping organisations increase revenue instead of cutting costs.”
5. Gartner Identifies the Top 10 Strategic Technologies for 2011 – Gartner
“A strategic technology may be an existing technology that has matured and/or become suitable for a wider range of uses. It may also be an emerging technology that offers an opportunity for strategic business advantage for early adopters or with potential for significant market disruption in the next five years.”
“IT budget benchmarks continue to be a hot topic for CIOs, especially in the wake of a recession that has caused companies to cut IT budgets to the bone. To help CIOs defend their budget levels, determine whether more cuts are in order, and/or build the case for increased IT spending, Forrester provides our annual IT budget benchmarks, based on data from our global IT budget and spending surveys.”
7. Opportunity for CIOs to prove their value is now – Deloitte
“Enabling business cost reduction will continue to be the top priority for IT departments in 2011. Security has become an increased priority and now ranks second. Perhaps the most striking result is that IT business alignment is actually seen as less of a priority compared to last year, despite the fact that only 38% of respondents thought that the business viewed them as a value adding partner.”
8. CIOs in 2011: The IT Roles and Strategies in High Demand - CIO
“CIOs have finally emerged from the dark days of budget-slashing, cost-cutting and headcount-reducing. The metaphorical knives, axes and saws can all be put away. “Cost reduction” is out for 2011. What’s in? Key portfolio and project management roles as well as demand for more consistent delivery of IT services.”
9. 2011 IT Spending Report: CIOs to Spend More on Cloud, Automation – InfoTech Spotlight
“As 2010 draws to a close and executives plan for next year in these marginally improved business conditions, CIOs will pursue scalable technologies that leverage tools such as automation, social media and mobility while limiting capital investment, making workforces more agile while shrinking footprint.”
10. IT Budgets Remain Stagnant for Many CIOs – CIO Insight
“Business productivity, agility/speed to market, IT-business alignment, IT reliability/efficiency and business process re-engineering all remain top priorities. Many CIOs find themselves challenged to address these needs with shrinking resources. At the same time, leveraging IT to reduce overall business expense is now a top priority.”
11. Your CEO’s 2011 Agenda: What CIOs Need to Know – CIO
“You want to be strategic? Then get to know your CEO’s agenda and how you can help solve your company’s most pressing problems in 2011. A new Gartner report outlines seven critical areas.”Business leaders see very uncertain times ahead in 2011, and they must defend growth despite falling business and consumer confidence,” noted Mark Raskino, a VP and Gartner Fellow, in the report.”
12. IT Consolidation and Virtualization Are Top Priorities for State CIOs – Govtech.com
“IT consolidation, budget and cost control, and health care are among the most critical priorities for state CIOs in 2011, according to the annual membership survey of the National Association of State Chief Information Officers.”
